How it works

A quick run every day. One skill at a time.

  1. 1

    Play the Daily.

A quick run with three hearts. String right answers together and the questions get harder and the points multiply.

  2. 2

    Miss one, learn why.

Every question is tagged by domain and skill, and every answer comes with an explanation.

  3. 3

    Drill that skill.

Practice any single skill at any difficulty, or just the questions you got wrong.

  4. 4

    Beat your best.

Come back tomorrow and climb. Progress shows your accuracy and your strongest skills.

Built on the digital SAT blueprint.

Every question is tagged by section, domain, skill and difficulty, so you can practice exactly what you need. Full tests run like test day: two Reading & Writing modules, a break, then two Math modules.

Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

A quick run with three hearts. Each right answer builds your streak: the questions get harder as it grows, and your points multiply (×2 from three in a row, ×3 from six). A miss costs a heart and drops you back to easy. Best is your longest streak.

Statistics and Probability · Lesson 3

Counting, Arrangements, and Expected Value

Multiplication principle. If one choice can be made aa ways and a second, separate choice bb ways, the two together can be made a×ba \times b ways. With 3 breads and 5 fillings, there are 3×5=153 \times 5 = 15 sandwiches. Multiply, don't add, when you make one choice from each group.

Order matters: arrangements (permutations). Choosing 3 of 8 people for president, vice president, and treasurer gives 8×7×6=3368 \times 7 \times 6 = 336 arrangements, because each role is different. Count the slots and multiply the shrinking number of options.

Order doesn't matter: selections (combinations). Choosing a 3-person committee of equals from 8 people counts each group once. Every group of 3 can be ordered 3×2×1=63 \times 2 \times 1 = 6 ways, so divide: 3366=56\frac{336}{6} = 56. In general, to choose rr of nn when order doesn't matter, multiply the rr shrinking options and divide by r×(r−1)×⋯×1r \times (r - 1) \times \cdots \times 1, the number of ways to order the chosen group.

Ask: if I swapped two of the chosen people, would I have something different? If yes, order matters. If no, divide by the number of orderings.

Expected value. For a game or random process, the expected value is the long-run average: multiply each outcome by its probability and add. It does not need to be a value that can actually occur.

Arrangements versus selections, choosing 3 from 8
SituationOrder matters?Count
Gold, silver, and bronze for 3 of 8 runnersYes8 × 7 × 6 = 336
A 3-person team from 8 peopleNo336 ÷ 6 = 56
A 3-digit code from 8 digits, repeats allowedYes8 × 8 × 8 = 512

Worked example Easy

A sandwich shop offers 3 kinds of bread, 5 fillings, and 4 sauces. A customer chooses exactly one bread, one filling, and one sauce. How many different sandwiches are possible?

  1. 1212
  2. 1515
  3. 6060Answer
  4. 220220

How to solve it

  1. The customer makes one choice from each of three groups.
  2. By the multiplication principle, multiply the group sizes: 3×5×4=603 \times 5 \times 4 = 60.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 12 adds the group sizes, 3+5+43 + 5 + 4. One choice from each group means multiplying.
  • B. Incorrect. 15 multiplies the breads and fillings but forgets the 4 sauces. Multiply by 4 as well.
  • C. Correct. One bread, one filling, and one sauce: 3×5×4=603 \times 5 \times 4 = 60 sandwiches.
  • D. Incorrect. 220 counts ways to pick any 3 of the 12 items with no rule, 12⋅11⋅106\frac{12 \cdot 11 \cdot 10}{6}. That allows three breads, for example.

Worked example Medium

A teacher will choose 3 students from a group of 8 to form a planning committee. All committee members have the same role. How many different committees are possible?

  1. 2424
  2. 5656Answer
  3. 336336
  4. 512512

How to solve it

  1. Order doesn't matter: the members have the same role, so the same 3 students in a different order are the same committee.
  2. Count ordered choices first: 8×7×6=3368 \times 7 \times 6 = 336.
  3. Each committee of 3 was counted once for each of its 3×2×1=63 \times 2 \times 1 = 6 orderings, so divide: 3366=56\frac{336}{6} = 56.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 24 multiplies 8 by 3, which is not a counting rule. Count ordered picks, 8×7×68 \times 7 \times 6, then divide by the orderings.
  • B. Correct. There are 8×7×6=3368 \times 7 \times 6 = 336 ordered picks, and each committee appears in 6 orders, so there are 3366=56\frac{336}{6} = 56 committees.
  • C. Incorrect. 336 counts ordered picks, as if the 3 students held different roles. The committee members are equal, so divide by 6.
  • D. Incorrect. 512 is 838^3, which allows the same student to be picked more than once. A student can sit on the committee only once.

Trap Arrangement or selection?

The wrong choices for a committee question almost always include the ordered count. Look for words that create different roles (first, second, president, gold) versus equal ones (team, committee, group, pick 3). Only different roles make order matter.

Trap Repetition allowed or not

Codes, passwords, and license plates usually allow repeats, so each position has the full number of options. People, prizes, and seats usually can't repeat, so the options shrink by one each time. Read the stem for which case you have.

Calculator When a calculator is faster

Desmos has built-in counting functions: nCr(8, 3) gives 56 selections and nPr(8, 3) gives 336 arrangements. Many approved handheld calculators have the same keys.

The calculator does not decide which function to use. Decide first whether order matters and whether repeats are allowed; then the calculator can handle larger numbers.

Full-length tests

Each test mirrors the digital SAT®: 98 questions across four modules, 2 hr 14 min on official timing.

A little harder on purpose. These tests can run slightly tougher than test day, which makes them good practice: if you can handle these, the real one should feel easier. No question appears in more than one test, Challenge Tests included.

Challenge Tests Hardest of the hardest

Same 98-question format, built from harder material: a hard Module 1, then a Module 2 made mostly of the hardest questions.
