How it works

One run a day. One skill at a time.

  1. 1

    Play the Daily.

A quick run with three hearts. String right answers together and the questions get harder and the points multiply.

  2. 2

    Miss one, learn why.

Every question is tagged by domain and skill, and every answer comes with an explanation.

  3. 3

    Drill that skill.

Practice any single skill at any difficulty, or just the questions you got wrong.

  4. 4

    Beat your best.

Come back tomorrow and climb. Progress shows your accuracy and your strongest skills.

Built around the real SAT blueprint.

Every question is tagged by section, domain, skill and difficulty, so you can practice exactly what you need. Full tests run like test day: two Reading & Writing modules, a break, then two Math modules.

Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests use the hardest material throughout.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

A quick run with three hearts. Each right answer builds your streak: the questions get harder as it grows, and your points multiply (×2 from three in a row, ×3 from six). A miss costs a heart and drops you back to easy. Best is your longest streak.

Ratios, rates, proportions and units · Lesson 2

Rates and unit rates

A rate compares two quantities measured in different units, such as 192 miles driven on 6 gallons of gas. A unit rate is the amount for one unit of the second quantity: 192÷6=32192 \div 6 = 32 miles per gallon. The word per means for each, and it signals division.

Once you have a unit rate, two moves answer most questions. Amount = rate × time (or rate × quantity). Time = amount ÷ rate. At 32 miles per gallon, 10 gallons take the car 320 miles, and a 288-mile trip uses 288÷32=9288 \div 32 = 9 gallons.

To compare two deals or two speeds, turn each into a unit rate with the same units, then compare the unit rates.

Working together. When two machines or people work on the same job at the same time, their rates add: what they finish together in one hour is what the first finishes in an hour plus what the second finishes. Their times do not add. Working together is always faster than either one alone.

Average speed for a trip is total distance ÷ total time. In general it is not the average of the speeds: when two legs cover equal distances, the trip spends more time at the slower speed, so the average speed is closer to the slower one. When the two speeds differ, it equals the average of the speeds only if the legs take equal times.

Worked example Easy

A printer prints 270 pages in 15 minutes at a constant rate.

At this rate, how many pages will the printer print in 40 minutes?

  1. 1818
  2. 295295
  3. 720720Answer
  4. 10,80010{,}800

How to solve it

  1. Find the unit rate: 270÷15=18270 \div 15 = 18 pages per minute.
  2. Multiply by the time: 18×40=72018 \times 40 = 720 pages.
  3. Check: 40 minutes is more than twice 15 minutes, so the answer should be more than twice 270. It is.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 18 is the unit rate, the number of pages printed in 1 minute. Multiply it by 40 minutes.
  • B. Incorrect. 295 comes from adding instead of scaling: 40 minutes is 25 minutes more than 15, so it adds 25 to 270. Each extra minute adds 18 pages, not 1.
  • C. Correct. The printer prints 270÷15=18270 \div 15 = 18 pages per minute, so in 40 minutes it prints 18×40=72018 \times 40 = 720 pages.
  • D. Incorrect. This multiplies 270 pages by 40 minutes, 270×40=10,800270 \times 40 = 10{,}800, and never divides by 15. The 270 pages took 15 minutes, not 1 minute.

Worked example Medium

Machine A makes 140 bolts per hour, and machine B makes 100 bolts per hour. The two machines start at the same time and each runs at its own constant rate.

How many hours will it take the two machines, working together, to make a total of 1,680 bolts?

  1. 77Answer
  2. 1212
  3. 16.816.8
  4. 28.828.8

How to solve it

  1. Working together, the rates add: 140+100=240140 + 100 = 240 bolts per hour.
  2. Time = amount ÷ rate: 1,680÷240=71{,}680 \div 240 = 7 hours.
  3. Check: in 7 hours, A makes 140×7=980140 \times 7 = 980 bolts and B makes 100×7=700100 \times 7 = 700, and 980+700=1,680980 + 700 = 1{,}680.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Correct. Together the machines make 140+100=240140 + 100 = 240 bolts per hour, so 1,680 bolts take 1,680÷240=71{,}680 \div 240 = 7 hours.
  • B. Incorrect. This is the time for machine A alone, 1,680÷140=121{,}680 \div 140 = 12. With machine B helping, the job takes less time.
  • C. Incorrect. This is the time for machine B alone, 1,680÷100=16.81{,}680 \div 100 = 16.8. Working together must be faster than either machine alone.
  • D. Incorrect. This adds the two separate times, 12+16.8=28.812 + 16.8 = 28.8. When machines work at the same time, add their rates, not their times.

Trap Adding times instead of rates

When two workers share a job, adding the times each would take alone gives a time longer than either one alone, which can't be right. Add the rates (jobs or items per hour), then divide the job by the combined rate.

Trap Averaging two speeds

A boat travels 12 miles out at 20 miles per hour and 12 miles back at 30 miles per hour. The trip out takes 12÷20=0.612 \div 20 = 0.6 hour and the trip back takes 12÷30=0.412 \div 30 = 0.4 hour, so the average speed is 24÷1=2424 \div 1 = 24 miles per hour, not 25. The boat spends more time at the slower speed, so the average is closer to 20. Always divide total distance by total time.

Desmos When Desmos isn’t faster

Most rate questions take only a few operations, so the work is choosing them, not computing. Desmos doesn't help you decide whether to multiply or divide.

Desmos is still a good calculator. Typing 1680/(140+100) on an expression line shows 7, and the parentheses make sure the rates are added before you divide. For simple numbers such as 270÷15270 \div 15, mental math is faster.
