  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

    The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

    The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests use the hardest material throughout.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

Linear functions: strategy summary

  1. f(x)=mx+bf(x) = mx + b: mm is the slope, the change in output for each 1-unit increase in input. b=f(0)b = f(0) is the output when the input is 0.
  2. In context, a number that multiplies the input is a rate per unit (dollars per month). A number that stands alone is the starting value (a one-time fee, the amount at time 0).
  3. Positive slope: increasing. Negative slope: decreasing, and the amount goes down by that much per unit. Zero slope: constant.
  4. The change over kk units is k⋅mk \cdot m. Don't confuse it with f(k)f(k), which is a total.
  5. Slope from two points: m=y2−y1x2−x1m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}, rise over run, subtracting in the same order on top and bottom.
  6. In a table, divide the change in f(x)f(x) by the change in xx, which is not always 1.
  7. Intercept: read it where x=0x = 0, or substitute a point into y=mx+by = mx + b and solve for bb. Then check your equation with both given points.
  8. f(3)f(3): 3 is the input, so substitute. f(x)=3f(x) = 3: 3 is the output, so set the expression equal to 3 and solve.
  9. f(a+1)f(a + 1): replace xx with (a+1)(a + 1) in parentheses and distribute. It is not f(a)+1f(a) + 1. For a linear function, f(2)−f(0)f(2) - f(0) is the slope times 2.
  10. Desmos: a table plus y1∼mx1+by_1 \sim mx_1 + b gives the slope and intercept. Type f(x)=…f(x) = \ldots, then f(3), to evaluate.
