A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

Key Ideas and Details · Lesson 4

Sequence, comparison, and cause and effect

Some questions ask how ideas in the passage connect: what happened first or next (sequence), how two things are alike or different (comparison), or why something happens (cause and effect).

Signal words do much of the work. Find them, and the relationship is usually stated right there. For sequence questions, make a quick numbered timeline in your head; passages don't always describe events in the order they happened.

For cause and effect, always confirm the direction: which idea is the cause and which is the result. For comparisons, make sure each half of a choice describes the right thing.

Worked example Easy

Most repairs aim to hide damage. A cracked plate glued back together is considered a success if no one can tell it was ever broken. The Japanese repair tradition known as kintsugi takes the opposite approach: it makes the break the most visible part of the object.

A kintsugi repair begins with cleaning the broken pieces so that no dust or old adhesive remains. The craftsperson then joins the pieces with a natural lacquer made from the sap of a tree. This lacquer does not dry the way ordinary glue does; it hardens slowly, and only in warm, humid air, so the repaired object may sit in a special damp cabinet for days or even weeks between steps. Once the joints have hardened, any chips or gaps are filled with more lacquer and sanded smooth. Only at the very end does the craftsperson paint a thin final line of lacquer along each seam and dust it with powdered gold.

Because of this slow process, a single bowl can take more than a month to repair. Admirers of the craft argue that the time is part of the point. A bowl repaired with kintsugi, they say, is not returned to its original state but given a new history, with its golden seams recording exactly where and how it broke.

According to paragraph 2, which step comes immediately after the joints have hardened?

  1. Cleaning the dust and old adhesive from each broken piece
  2. Dusting a final line of lacquer along each seam with gold
  3. Joining the pieces together with lacquer made from tree sap
  4. Filling any chips and gaps with lacquer and sanding themAnswer

How to solve it

  1. Build the timeline from paragraph 2: (1) clean the pieces, (2) join them with lacquer, (3) let the joints harden, (4) fill chips and gaps and sand, (5) paint a final line and dust it with gold.
  2. The stem asks for the step right after the joints harden: step 4.
  3. The signal words confirm it: “Once the joints have hardened” introduces step 4, and “Only at the very end” marks step 5.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. Cleaning the pieces is the first step: the repair “begins with cleaning the broken pieces.”
  • B. Incorrect. The gold comes “only at the very end,” after the gaps are filled and sanded, so it is not the step immediately after the joints harden.
  • C. Incorrect. Joining the pieces comes before the hardening, since the joints must be made before they can harden.
  • D. Correct. The passage says, “Once the joints have hardened, any chips or gaps are filled with more lacquer and sanded smooth.”

Worked example Medium

According to the passage, a single kintsugi repair can take more than a month mainly because:

  1. the broken pieces must first be cleaned of every trace of old adhesive.
  2. the lacquer hardens slowly, and only in warm, humid air, between steps.Answer
  3. powdered gold is rare and can take a craftsperson weeks to obtain.
  4. the final golden line must be repainted many times so it looks even.

How to solve it

  1. Look for the signal word. Paragraph 3 begins, “Because of this slow process, a single bowl can take more than a month to repair.”
  2. This slow process points back to paragraph 2, which explains what is slow: the lacquer “hardens slowly, and only in warm, humid air,” so the object may wait “days or even weeks between steps.”
  3. That is B. Choice A names a real step, but the passage never says cleaning takes long.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. Cleaning is a real step, but the passage never says it is slow; the delay comes from waiting for the lacquer to harden.
  • B. Correct. The lacquer “hardens slowly, and only in warm, humid air,” so the object may sit “for days or even weeks between steps,” and paragraph 3 adds, “Because of this slow process, a single bowl can take more than a month to repair.”
  • C. Incorrect. The passage never says powdered gold is rare or hard to get; it appears only in the final step.
  • D. Incorrect. The passage describes “a thin final line” painted at the very end, not a line repainted many times.

Trap A real step that is not the cause, or a reversed cause

In cause-and-effect questions, a wrong answer often names something true from the passage that is not the cause the stem asks about. Cleaning the pieces really is part of kintsugi, but the passage never links it to the long repair time.

Also check direction. If the passage says A happens because of B, a choice saying B happens because of A uses the right words and gets the relationship backward. Find the signal word and confirm which idea is the cause.
