Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

Key Ideas and Details · Lesson 2

Supporting details

Detail questions ask what the passage directly states. Their stems often begin According to the passage or As described in paragraph 2. The answer is written in the text, usually in different words.

Don't answer from memory. Use the stem's key words (a name, a number, a term like direction) to find the right lines, read a sentence before and after, and then put the answer in your own words. On the online test, the highlighter tool can help you mark key terms as you read, so you can find them again fast.

The right choice is a paraphrase of the line: same meaning, different wording. Wrong choices often copy the passage's exact words but attach them to the wrong idea, mix two details together, or add something the passage never says.

Worked example Easy

A honeybee that discovers a rich patch of flowers does not keep the news to herself. After returning to the hive, she performs a series of movements on the vertical surface of the honeycomb that other workers can read like a map.

The most important part of this performance is called the waggle run. The bee walks forward in a straight line while shaking her abdomen rapidly from side to side, then circles back to her starting point and repeats the run, alternating between a loop to the right and a loop to the left. Seen from above, her path traces a figure eight.

The direction of the waggle run tells the other bees which way to fly. Inside the dark hive, straight up the comb stands for the direction of the sun. A run pointed straight up means “fly toward the sun”; a run tilted 40 degrees to the right of straight up means “fly 40 degrees to the right of the sun.”

The length of the run carries a second message. The longer the bee waggles during each run, the farther away the flowers are. A run lasting about one second points to food roughly a kilometer away.

Because the hive is dark, the watching bees cannot simply see the dance. Instead, they crowd close to the dancer and follow her movements by touch, sensing the vibrations of her body through the comb.

According to the passage, the direction of the waggle run tells other bees:

  1. how far away the flower patch is from the hive.
  2. how many flowers the newly discovered patch contains.
  3. which way to fly in relation to the sun's position.Answer
  4. how many of the workers should fly to the flowers.

How to solve it

  1. The stem names a specific detail: the direction of the run. Scan for that word.
  2. Paragraph 3 begins, “The direction of the waggle run tells the other bees which way to fly,” and explains that straight up the comb stands for the direction of the sun.
  3. Match that line to the choices: C. Distance (choice A) is a different detail, carried by the run's length in paragraph 4.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. Distance comes from the length of the run, described in paragraph 4 (“the longer the bee waggles... the farther away the flowers are”), not from its direction.
  • B. Incorrect. The passage calls the patch rich but never says the dance reports how many flowers it contains.
  • C. Correct. Paragraph 3 says “The direction of the waggle run tells the other bees which way to fly,” and “straight up the comb stands for the direction of the sun.”
  • D. Incorrect. Nothing in the passage says the dance tells the hive how many of the workers should go to the flowers.

Worked example Medium

According to the passage, the bees watching a dance learn its message mainly by:

  1. staying close to the dancer and sensing her vibrations through the comb.Answer
  2. looking down at the figure eight that the dancer traces across the comb.
  3. listening closely to buzzing sounds that the dancer makes with her wings.
  4. smelling the flowers' scent that the dancer carries back on her body.

How to solve it

  1. Find the lines that answer the stem. The last paragraph explains how the watching bees get the message.
  2. It says they “cannot simply see the dance” because the hive is dark, so they “follow her movements by touch, sensing the vibrations of her body through the comb.”
  3. Beware of B. Paragraph 2 says the path looks like a figure eight “seen from above,” but that describes the shape of the path, not how the watching bees perceive it.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Correct. The last paragraph says the bees “crowd close to the dancer and follow her movements by touch, sensing the vibrations of her body through the comb.”
  • B. Incorrect. The figure eight is how the path looks seen from above, but the last paragraph says that in the dark hive the bees “cannot simply see the dance.”
  • C. Incorrect. The passage mentions vibrations felt by touch, never buzzing sounds made with the dancer's wings.
  • D. Incorrect. The passage says nothing about scent or smelling. It describes only the dancer's movements and the watchers' sense of touch.

Trap Right words, wrong part of the passage

Detail questions are built from the passage's own words, so a wrong choice can sound familiar. Figure eight and seen from above really appear in the bee passage, but they answer a different question (what the path looks like) than the one asked (how the watching bees read it).

A close cousin is the swapped detail: the passage gives two facts side by side, such as direction and distance, and a wrong choice pairs one fact with the other's job. Before you choose, go back to the exact lines that answer the stem.

Full-length tests

Each test mirrors the digital SAT®: 98 questions across four modules, 2 hr 14 min on official timing.

A little harder on purpose. These tests can run slightly tougher than test day, which makes them good practice: if you can handle these, the real one should feel easier. No question appears in more than one test, Challenge Tests included.

Challenge Tests Hardest of the hardest

Same 98-question format, built from harder material: a hard Module 1, then a Module 2 made mostly of the hardest questions.
