How it works

A quick run every day. One skill at a time.

  1. 1

    Play the Daily.

A quick run with three hearts. String right answers together and the questions get harder and the points multiply.

  2. 2

    Miss one, learn why.

Every question is tagged by domain and skill, and every answer comes with an explanation.

  3. 3

    Drill that skill.

Practice any single skill at any difficulty, or just the questions you got wrong.

  4. 4

    Beat your best.

Come back tomorrow and climb. Progress shows your accuracy and your strongest skills.

Built on the digital SAT blueprint.

Every question is tagged by section, domain, skill and difficulty, so you can practice exactly what you need. Full tests run like test day: two Reading & Writing modules, a break, then two Math modules.

Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

A quick run with three hearts. Each right answer builds your streak: the questions get harder as it grows, and your points multiply (×2 from three in a row, ×3 from six). A miss costs a heart and drops you back to easy. Best is your longest streak.

Statistics and Probability · Lesson 1

Mean, Median, Mode, and Spread

Measures of center describe a typical value. The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the values are in order; with an even number of values, it is the mean of the two middle values. The mode is the value that appears most often.

Measures of spread describe how far apart the values are. The range is the greatest value minus the least. The standard deviation measures how far values typically sit from the mean: values bunched close to the mean give a small standard deviation, and values scattered far from it give a large one. You can usually compare standard deviations by looking at how tightly the values cluster, without computing them.

Work backward with the sum. Since mean = sum ÷ count, you also know sum = mean × count. If 5 values have a mean of 85, their sum is 5×85=4255 \times 85 = 425. Most "missing value" questions are solved by finding the sum you need and subtracting the sum you have.

Changing the data. Adding the same number to every value shifts the mean and median by that number but leaves the range and standard deviation unchanged, because every gap stays the same. Multiplying every value by a positive number multiplies the mean, median, range, and standard deviation by that number. One extreme value (an outlier) pulls the mean toward it much more than it moves the median.

What each measure is and how an outlier affects it
MeasureHow to find itEffect of one very large outlier
MeanSum of values ÷ number of valuesPulled strongly toward the outlier
MedianMiddle value of the ordered listMoves little or not at all
ModeMost frequent valueUsually unchanged
RangeGreatest value − least valueGrows a lot
Standard deviationTypical distance from the meanGrows

Worked example Easy

A gardener recorded the number of tomatoes picked on each of 6 days: 12, 7, 15, 7, 9, and 10. What is the median of these 6 numbers?

  1. 77
  2. 9.59.5Answer
  3. 1010
  4. 1111

How to solve it

  1. Put the values in order: 7, 7, 9, 10, 12, 15.
  2. There are 6 values, an even number, so the median is the mean of the 3rd and 4th values: 9 and 10.
  3. 9+102=9.5\frac{9 + 10}{2} = 9.5.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 7 is the mode, the value that appears twice. The median is the middle of the ordered list, which is 9.5.
  • B. Correct. In order the values are 7, 7, 9, 10, 12, 15. The two middle values are 9 and 10, and their mean is 9.5.
  • C. Incorrect. 10 is the mean: the sum is 60 and 60÷6=1060 \div 6 = 10. The question asks for the median, 9.5.
  • D. Incorrect. 11 averages the middle two numbers of the list as written, 15 and 7. Order the values first; the median is 9.5.

Worked example Medium

Priya's scores on her first 4 quizzes were 82, 90, 76, and 88. What score must she earn on her 5th quiz so that the mean of all 5 scores is exactly 85?

  1. 8484
  2. 8585
  3. 8686
  4. 8989Answer

How to solve it

  1. A mean of 85 over 5 quizzes needs a total of 5×85=4255 \times 85 = 425 points.
  2. Her first 4 scores total 82+90+76+88=33682 + 90 + 76 + 88 = 336.
  3. She needs 425−336=89425 - 336 = 89 on the 5th quiz.
  4. Check: 336+895=4255=85\frac{336 + 89}{5} = \frac{425}{5} = 85.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 84 is the mean of her first 4 scores, 336÷4336 \div 4. The question asks what 5th score raises the mean to 85.
  • B. Incorrect. A score of 85 gives a total of 421 and a mean of 84.2. Because her current mean is below 85, she needs more than 85.
  • C. Incorrect. 86 adds the 1-point gap between 84 and 85 only once. Each of the first 4 quizzes is 1 point short, so the 5th must be 85+4=8985 + 4 = 89, not 86.
  • D. Correct. She needs a total of 5×85=4255 \times 85 = 425, has 336, and so needs 425−336=89425 - 336 = 89.

Trap Finding the median of an unsorted list

The median is the middle of the ordered list. The ACT often lists data out of order, and a wrong choice is waiting for the student who takes the middle of the list as printed. Sort first, then count in from both ends.

Trap Averaging averages

To work with a mean, convert it to a sum. A choice like 86 in the quiz problem comes from adjusting the target by the gap once, as if only one value were short. Multiply mean × count to get the total you need, then subtract what you have.

Calculator When a calculator is faster

For a long list, a calculator saves time. In the online test's Desmos calculator, type mean([12, 7, 15, 7, 9, 10]) or median([12, 7, 15, 7, 9, 10]) and read the result. Many approved handheld calculators have a statistics mode that does the same.

For missing-value questions, the calculator only does the arithmetic. The key step, sum = mean × count, is yours: 5×85−3365 \times 85 - 336 takes seconds either way.

Full-length tests

Each test mirrors the digital SAT®: 98 questions across four modules, 2 hr 14 min on official timing.

A little harder on purpose. These tests can run slightly tougher than test day, which makes them good practice: if you can handle these, the real one should feel easier. No question appears in more than one test, Challenge Tests included.

Challenge Tests Hardest of the hardest

Same 98-question format, built from harder material: a hard Module 1, then a Module 2 made mostly of the hardest questions.
