Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

    The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

    The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

A quick run with three hearts. Each right answer builds your streak: the questions get harder as it grows, and your points multiply (×2 from three in a row, ×3 from six). A miss costs a heart and drops you back to easy. Best is your longest streak.

Geometry and Trigonometry · Lesson 3

Area, surface area, and volume

Area measures the flat space inside a figure in square units. Volume measures the space inside a solid in cubic units. Surface area is the total area of all the faces of a solid, in square units.

The ACT test pages don't list a formula sheet, so learn the formulas in the table. In this course, a question that needs a less common formula, such as the volume of a cone or a sphere, gives it in the stem. In every formula, a height is measured at a right angle to the base, not along a slanted side.

Area and volume formulas
FigureFormula
RectangleA=lwA = lw
TriangleA=12bhA = \frac{1}{2}bh
ParallelogramA=bhA = bh
TrapezoidA=12(b1+b2)hA = \frac{1}{2}(b_1 + b_2)h
CircleA=πr2A = \pi r^2, circumference C=2πrC = 2\pi r
Rectangular boxV=lwhV = lwh, surface area 2(lw+lh+wh)2(lw + lh + wh)
Cube with edge ssV=s3V = s^3, surface area 6s26s^2
CylinderV=πr2hV = \pi r^2 h, curved side area 2πrh2\pi rh
Cone (given when needed)V=13πr2hV = \frac{1}{3}\pi r^2 h
Sphere (given when needed)V=43πr3V = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3

Composite figures. Break an odd shape into pieces you know, then add the pieces, or find a big shape and subtract what is cut out.

Scaling. If every length of a figure is multiplied by kk, perimeter is multiplied by kk, area by k2k^2, and volume by k3k^3. When different lengths change by different factors, multiply the factors as they appear in the formula: tripling rr in πr2h\pi r^2 h multiplies the volume by 9.

Worked example Easy

A trapezoid with bases 7 and 13 and height 61376
A trapezoid with bases 7 and 13 and height 6 A trapezoid with a horizontal bottom base labelled 13 and a shorter horizontal top base labelled 7. A dashed vertical segment from the top base down to the bottom base is labelled 6 and meets the bottom base at a right angle.

In the trapezoid shown, the parallel sides have lengths 7 and 13, and the height is 6. What is the area of the trapezoid?

  1. 4242
  2. 6060Answer
  3. 7878
  4. 120120

How to solve it

  1. The area of a trapezoid is 12(b1+b2)h\frac{1}{2}(b_1 + b_2)h: half the sum of the parallel sides, times the height.
  2. 12(7+13)(6)=12(20)(6)=60\frac{1}{2}(7 + 13)(6) = \frac{1}{2}(20)(6) = 60.
  3. Sense check: the area must be between 7⋅6=427 \cdot 6 = 42 and 13⋅6=7813 \cdot 6 = 78, and 60 is.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 4242 is 7⋅67 \cdot 6, a rectangle built on the short base only. The trapezoid is wider than that at the bottom, so its area is larger.
  • B. Correct. 12(7+13)(6)=60\frac{1}{2}(7 + 13)(6) = 60: average the two bases, then multiply by the height.
  • C. Incorrect. 7878 is 13⋅613 \cdot 6, a rectangle on the long base. That counts the two corner triangles that lie outside the slanted sides.
  • D. Incorrect. 120120 is (7+13)⋅6(7 + 13) \cdot 6 without the 12\frac{1}{2}. Adding the bases doubles the width, so you must halve the product.

Worked example Medium

A cylindrical water tank has a diameter of 6 meters and a height of 5 meters. What is the volume of the tank, in cubic meters?

  1. 15π15\pi
  2. 30π30\pi
  3. 45π45\piAnswer
  4. 180π180\pi

How to solve it

  1. The radius is half the diameter: r=3r = 3.
  2. The volume of a cylinder is πr2h\pi r^2 h, the area of the circular base times the height.
  3. π(3)2(5)=45π\pi (3)^2 (5) = 45\pi cubic meters.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 15π15\pi is π⋅3⋅5\pi \cdot 3 \cdot 5; it forgets to square the radius. The base area is πr2=9π\pi r^2 = 9\pi.
  • B. Incorrect. 30π30\pi is 2πrh2\pi rh, the area of the curved side. That measures a surface in square meters, not the space inside.
  • C. Correct. The radius is 3, so V=π(3)2(5)=45πV = \pi (3)^2 (5) = 45\pi cubic meters.
  • D. Incorrect. 180π180\pi uses the diameter, 6, as the radius: π(6)2(5)\pi (6)^2 (5). Halve the diameter first.

Trap Radius or diameter

Check whether a question gives the radius or the diameter before you square anything. Using the diameter in πr2\pi r^2 makes the answer 4 times too large, and that choice is usually waiting for you.

Trap Scaling volume by the plain factor

Tripling every length of a solid multiplies its volume by 33=273^3 = 27, not by 3 or 9. When the question changes the lengths, ask how many length factors the formula multiplies together, then raise or multiply the factors to match.

Calculator When a calculator isn’t faster

Most area and volume choices keep π\pi in the answer, such as 45π45\pi, so working by hand matches the choices directly. A calculator turns π\pi into a decimal that you would then have to match back.

A calculator helps when the numbers are awkward, or when the choices are decimals. In Desmos, typing pi3^25 gives about 141.37, which you can compare with decimal choices.
