MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

Geometry and Trigonometry · Lesson 1

Angles, parallel lines, and similar triangles

Most angle questions are solved by chaining a few facts together, often called angle chasing. Write each angle you can find on the figure, then use it to find the next one.

The facts below are the ones you will use again and again. None of them is printed on the test.

Angle facts to know
SituationRule
The three angles of a triangleAdd to 180∘180^\circ
Angles that form a straight lineAdd to 180∘180^\circ
Vertical angles (across from each other where two lines cross)Equal
An exterior angle of a triangleEquals the sum of the two interior angles not next to it
Parallel lines cut by a transversalCorresponding angles are equal, alternate interior angles are equal, and same-side interior angles add to 180∘180^\circ
An isosceles triangleThe angles opposite the two equal sides are equal
A polygon with nn sidesInterior angles add to (n−2)⋅180∘(n - 2) \cdot 180^\circ

Similar triangles have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. If two angles of one triangle equal two angles of another (AA), the triangles are similar. A common setup: a segment drawn parallel to one side of a triangle cuts off a smaller triangle that is similar to the whole one.

In similar triangles, corresponding sides are in the same ratio, called the scale factor. Match sides by their angles: the sides across from equal angles correspond. If every length is multiplied by kk, the perimeter is multiplied by kk and the area by k2k^2.

Congruent triangles have the same shape and the same size. SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAS each prove congruence, and HL does for right triangles. Matching angles alone (AAA) proves only similarity.

Worked example Easy

Triangle ABC with side AC extended to point D55°130°x°ACDB
Triangle ABC with side AC extended to point D Triangle ABC with base AC horizontal, A at the left and C at the right, and B above the base between them. Side AC is extended to the right past C to point D. The angle at A is marked 55°, the angle outside the triangle between CD and CB is marked 130°, and the angle at B is marked x°.

In the figure, points A, C, and D lie on a line. What is the value of xx?

  1. 5050
  2. 7575Answer
  3. 105105
  4. 125125

How to solve it

  1. Angle BCD is an exterior angle of triangle ABC. An exterior angle equals the sum of the two interior angles that are not next to it, here the angles at A and B.
  2. So 55+x=13055 + x = 130, which gives x=75x = 75.
  3. Check another way: the interior angle at C is 180−130=50180 - 130 = 50, and 55+50+75=18055 + 50 + 75 = 180.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 5050 is the interior angle at C, 180−130180 - 130. That is one step short: the question asks for the angle at B, which is 180−55−50=75180 - 55 - 50 = 75.
  • B. Correct. The exterior angle at C equals the sum of the two remote interior angles, so 55+x=13055 + x = 130 and x=75x = 75.
  • C. Incorrect. 105105 is 55+5055 + 50, the sum of the two known interior angles. Subtract that sum from 180 to get the third angle, 75.
  • D. Incorrect. 125125 is 180−55180 - 55, which ignores the angle at C. The three interior angles total 180, and the angle at C is 50, so x=75x = 75.

Worked example Medium

Triangle ABC with segment DE parallel to BC546ABCDE
Triangle ABC with segment DE parallel to BC Triangle ABC with B at the bottom left, C at the bottom right, and A at the top. Point D is on side AB and point E is on side AC, and segment DE is drawn parallel to the base BC. AD is labelled 4, DB is labelled 6, and DE is labelled 5. BC has no label.

In triangle ABC, point D lies on AB‾\overline{AB}, point E lies on AC‾\overline{AC}, and DE‾\overline{DE} is parallel to BC‾\overline{BC}. If AD = 4, DB = 6, and DE = 5, what is the length of BC‾\overline{BC}?

  1. 7.57.5
  2. 1111
  3. 12.512.5Answer
  4. 31.2531.25

How to solve it

  1. Because DE is parallel to BC, angle ADE equals angle ABC (corresponding angles), and the two triangles share angle A. By AA, triangle ADE is similar to triangle ABC.
  2. Match the sides: AD in the small triangle corresponds to AB in the large one, and AB=AD+DB=4+6=10AB = AD + DB = 4 + 6 = 10.
  3. The scale factor from small to large is ABAD=104=2.5\frac{AB}{AD} = \frac{10}{4} = 2.5.
  4. So BC=2.5⋅DE=2.5⋅5=12.5BC = 2.5 \cdot DE = 2.5 \cdot 5 = 12.5.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. 7.57.5 is 5⋅645 \cdot \frac{6}{4}, which compares DB with AD. DB is not a side of either triangle; the large triangle's side is the whole of AB, which is 10.
  • B. Incorrect. 1111 adds 6 to DE, as if the bigger triangle grew by adding a length. Similar figures grow by multiplying: 5⋅104=12.55 \cdot \frac{10}{4} = 12.5.
  • C. Correct. Triangle ADE is similar to triangle ABC with scale factor 104\frac{10}{4}, so BC=5⋅104=12.5BC = 5 \cdot \frac{10}{4} = 12.5.
  • D. Incorrect. 31.2531.25 is 5⋅(104)25 \cdot (\frac{10}{4})^2. Squaring the scale factor is right for areas, not for a length such as BC.

Trap Comparing a piece with a piece

When a parallel segment cuts a triangle, the sides of the big triangle are whole sides, such as AB = AD + DB. A choice built from DBAD\frac{DB}{AD} compares two pieces, and neither piece belongs to the large triangle alone. Write the two triangles' corresponding sides side by side before you set up the ratio.

Trap Scaling area like length

If one triangle's sides are 1.5 times another's, its area is 1.52=2.251.5^2 = 2.25 times as large, not 1.5 times. Expect a choice that uses the plain scale factor for an area, and one that cubes it.

Calculator When a calculator isn’t faster

Angle and similarity questions are reasoning plus one line of arithmetic, such as 180−55−50180 - 55 - 50 or 5⋅1045 \cdot \frac{10}{4}. The hard part is deciding which angles or sides go together, and no calculator does that for you.

On the online test the built-in Desmos calculator can handle the arithmetic, and on paper you can use your own approved calculator, but doing these steps by hand is usually just as fast.
