Built on the digital SAT blueprint.

Every question is tagged by section, domain, skill and difficulty, so you can practice exactly what you need. Full tests run like test day: two Reading & Writing modules, a break, then two Math modules.

Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

A quick run with three hearts. Each right answer builds your streak: the questions get harder as it grows, and your points multiply (×2 from three in a row, ×3 from six). A miss costs a heart and drops you back to easy. Best is your longest streak.

Integrating Skills and Modeling · Lesson 3

Averages and medians

The mean (average) is the sum of the values divided by the number of values. Turned around, sum == mean ×\times count, and that version solves most ACT average questions.

Missing value. If the mean of 5 numbers must be 85, the five numbers must add to 5×85=4255 \times 85 = 425. Subtract the sum you already have to find the missing number.

Combining groups (a weighted mean). When two groups of different sizes are combined, don't average the two means. Find each group's total, add the totals, and divide by the total count. The combined mean is closer to the mean of the larger group.

The median is the middle value after the values are put in order. With an even number of values, it is the mean of the two middle values. The mode is the value that appears most often.

Changing an extreme value. Making the largest value even larger raises the mean, because the sum goes up, but it leaves the median unchanged, because the same value is still in the middle.

Worked example Easy

Ravi's scores on five quizzes were 82, 90, 75, 88, and 95.

What is the mean of his five quiz scores?

  1. 86Answer
  2. 88
  3. 107.5
  4. 430

How to solve it

  1. Add the scores: 82+90+75+88+95=43082 + 90 + 75 + 88 + 95 = 430.
  2. Divide by the number of scores, 5: 430÷5=86430 \div 5 = 86.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Correct. The scores add to 82+90+75+88+95=43082 + 90 + 75 + 88 + 95 = 430, and 430÷5=86430 \div 5 = 86.
  • B. Incorrect. 88 is the median: in order the scores are 75, 82, 88, 90, 95, and 88 is in the middle. The question asks for the mean.
  • C. Incorrect. 107.5 is 430÷4430 \div 4, which divides by the wrong count. There are five scores, so divide by 5.
  • D. Incorrect. 430 is the sum of the scores. The mean divides that sum by the 5 scores.

Worked example Medium

Lena's mean score on her first 4 tests is 82.

What score does she need on her 5th test to raise her mean for all 5 tests to exactly 85?

  1. 85
  2. 88
  3. 94
  4. 97Answer

How to solve it

  1. Total so far: 4×82=3284 \times 82 = 328.
  2. Total needed for a mean of 85 on 5 tests: 5×85=4255 \times 85 = 425.
  3. Score needed: 425−328=97425 - 328 = 97.
  4. Check: 328+975=4255=85\frac{328 + 97}{5} = \frac{425}{5} = 85.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. A score of 85 leaves the mean below 85, because the first four tests average only 82: 328+855=82.6\frac{328 + 85}{5} = 82.6. The new score has to make up the shortfall.
  • B. Incorrect. 88 averages just two numbers, 82 and 88, to get 85. The 82 stands for four tests, so it carries four times the weight of the new score.
  • C. Incorrect. 94 is 85+3×385 + 3 \times 3, which makes up the 3-point shortfall for only three earlier tests. There are four earlier tests, so the score must be 85+4×3=9785 + 4 \times 3 = 97.
  • D. Correct. The 5 tests must total 5×85=4255 \times 85 = 425, the first 4 total 4×82=3284 \times 82 = 328, and 425−328=97425 - 328 = 97.

Trap Averaging the averages

Two groups with means of 70 and 90 have a combined mean of 80 only if the groups are the same size. Otherwise, weight each mean by its group's count: total of all values divided by total number of values. The combined mean always lands between the two means, closer to the larger group's mean.

Trap The middle of an unsorted list

The median is the middle of the ordered list. Picking the middle of the list as printed, or forgetting to average the two middle values when the count is even, gives a choice that looks reasonable but is wrong. Sort first, every time.

Calculator When a calculator is faster

For a long list, a calculator saves time. In Desmos, type mean([82, 90, 75, 88, 95]) or median([82, 90, 75, 88, 95]) and the value appears. For missing-value and combined-group questions, the setup sum == mean ×\times count on paper is still the faster route.

Full-length tests

Each test mirrors the digital SAT®: 98 questions across four modules, 2 hr 14 min on official timing.

A little harder on purpose. These tests can run slightly tougher than test day, which makes them good practice: if you can handle these, the real one should feel easier. No question appears in more than one test, Challenge Tests included.

Challenge Tests Hardest of the hardest

Same 98-question format, built from harder material: a hard Module 1, then a Module 2 made mostly of the hardest questions.
