How it works

A quick run every day. One skill at a time.

  1. 1

    Play the Daily.

A quick run with three hearts. String right answers together and the questions get harder and the points multiply.

  2. 2

    Miss one, learn why.

Every question is tagged by domain and skill, and every answer comes with an explanation.

  3. 3

    Drill that skill.

Practice any single skill at any difficulty, or just the questions you got wrong.

  4. 4

    Beat your best.

Come back tomorrow and climb. Progress shows your accuracy and your strongest skills.

Built on the digital SAT blueprint.

Every question is tagged by section, domain, skill and difficulty, so you can practice exactly what you need. Full tests run like test day: two Reading & Writing modules, a break, then two Math modules.

Explanations

Every answer, explained.

Not just the right letter: how to get there, and why the tempting answer is wrong.

MathProblem-Solving and Data AnalysisHard

A store raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later, it lowers the new price by 20%. The final price is what percent of the original price?

A80%
B96%Correct
C100%The trap
D104%

Check with $100: $100then$120then$96

  1. Turn each change into a multiplier.

    Up 20% means × 1.20. Down 20% means × 0.80.

  2. Apply them in order.

    1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96

  3. Read the answer.

The final price is 96% of the original. That’s B.

  4. Why not 100%?

The 20% cut is taken from the higher price, so it removes more than the 20% increase added.

98 questions across four modules, in the same order as the digital SAT: Reading & Writing Module 1 and Module 2 (27 questions each), a 10-minute break, then Math Module 1 and Module 2 (22 questions each). On official timing that’s 2 hr 14 min of testing. You get estimated section scores and a total at the end.

Yes. In the standard full-length tests, Module 2 of each section is the harder version if you get 60% or more of Module 1 right, and the easier version if you don’t. Challenge tests are built from harder material in every module.

Official timing, extended 1.5× time, or untimed, on every test, including the free ones. Extended time allows 48 minutes for each Reading & Writing module and about 52 for each Math module. Untimed removes the clock so you can focus on accuracy.

A quick run with three hearts. Each right answer builds your streak: the questions get harder as it grows, and your points multiply (×2 from three in a row, ×3 from six). A miss costs a heart and drops you back to easy. Best is your longest streak.

Every day at midnight Central Time. You get a fresh 9 easy, 9 medium, 9 hard and 9 challenging.

Sentence Structure · Lesson 4

Shifts in tense, person, and voice

A shift is an unnecessary change in the middle of a sentence or passage. The ACT tests three kinds.

Tense. If a story happens in the past, keep its verbs in the past: He measured each board and showed me how to sand it. Change tense only when the time really changes: The lighthouse was built in 1874, and today it still guides boats. A time word such as today, now, or by then is your clue that a change may be correct.

Person. Stay with the same point of view. If a sentence starts with beginners (third person), don't switch to you (second person) or we (first person) partway through. Also match number: plural beginners takes they, not he.

Voice. In active voice the subject does the action (she answered the questions); in passive voice the subject receives it (the questions were answered by her). Passive voice isn't wrong on its own, but switching from active to passive in the middle of a sentence about the same person is usually awkward. When one choice keeps the same subject in active voice and is otherwise correct, it is usually the answer.

Worked example Easy

Last summer, my grandfather taught me how to build a birdhouse in his garage. He measured each board twice before he cut it, and he shows me how to sand the edges smooth so no one would get a splinter.

Which choice is correct?

  1. NO CHANGE
  2. is showing me
  3. showed meAnswer
  4. will show me

How to solve it

  1. Look for a time clue: Last summer.
  2. Check the other verbs: taught, measured, cut, and would get. The story is in the past.
  3. Only C, showed, keeps the past tense.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. NO CHANGE uses the present tense shows in a story told in the past (taught, measured, cut).
  • B. Incorrect. Is showing is present progressive, which still shifts out of the past tense of the story.
  • C. Correct. Showed keeps the past tense of taught, measured, and cut: he showed me how to sand the edges smooth.
  • D. Incorrect. Will show moves to the future, but the lesson happened last summer.

Worked example Medium

Beginners are often tempted to learn juggling with three tennis balls. When beginners start learning to juggle, however, you should begin with two light scarves, because scarves fall slowly and give the hands time to react.

Which choice is correct?

  1. NO CHANGE
  2. we should
  3. he should
  4. they shouldAnswer

How to solve it

  1. Find who the sentence is about: beginners, plural and third person.
  2. The pronoun must match in person (third, not you or we) and in number (plural, not he).
  3. Only D, they should, matches both.

Why each choice is right or wrong

  • A. Incorrect. NO CHANGE shifts from the third-person beginners to the second-person you within the same sentence.
  • B. Incorrect. We shifts to the first person, although the sentence is about beginners, not the writer.
  • C. Incorrect. He is third person but singular, so it doesn't match the plural beginners.
  • D. Correct. They matches beginners in person and number: When beginners start learning to juggle, however, they should begin with two light scarves.

Trap Not every tense change is an error

The ACT sometimes underlines a verb that correctly changes tense, and a choice that matches the nearby verbs is the trap. Before you force every verb into the same tense, look for a time signal (in 1874, today, by the following spring). If the meaning moves in time, the tense should move with it.

Full-length tests

Each test mirrors the digital SAT®: 98 questions across four modules, 2 hr 14 min on official timing.

A little harder on purpose. These tests can run slightly tougher than test day, which makes them good practice: if you can handle these, the real one should feel easier. No question appears in more than one test, Challenge Tests included.

Challenge Tests Hardest of the hardest

Same 98-question format, built from harder material: a hard Module 1, then a Module 2 made mostly of the hardest questions.
